Features of the Del Mar Racetrack
The Del Mar Racetrack, located in the seaside town of Del Mar, California, is an iconic horse racing venue in the United States. Opened on July 3, 1937, the track was the brainchild of a group of Hollywood elites, including Bing Crosby, Pat O’Brien, and Gary Cooper, who’s main goal was to create a glamorous racing destination. Today, Del Mar remains a beloved summer tradition, famous for its slogan, “Where the Turf Meets the Surf.”
With a seating capacity of 44,000, Del Mar is the second-largest horse racing venue on the West Coast, only a bit smaller than Santa Anita Park. Its grandstand and lush green surroundings create a beautiful landscape for race days.
Track Features and Configuration
The main track at Del Mar is a one-mile dirt (1.60 km) oval with extra chutes for specific distances, like seven furlongs and 1 1/4 miles (2 km). The turf course, which is within the dirt oval, is 7/8 of a mile (1.40km) and has chutes for races of different lengths, including 1 1/16 (1.70 km) and 1 1/8 miles (1.81km). Known for its impeccable maintenance, the turf consists of a hybrid Bermuda blend designed for durability and performance.
Originally, Del Mar experimented with a synthetic Polytrack surface but, in the end, preferred a traditional dirt track to suit other Southern California venues. The track’s dirt surface, while great hot weather, can be more challenging during the rain, as it becomes muddy, adding an unpredictable element to the races.
Types of Racing and Season Schedule
Del Mar only hosts thoroughbred racing, with two live meets each year. The primary meet runs from mid-July to early September, coinciding with the summer fair season, while the second meet happens in November. During these periods, the track buzzes with excitement as fans flock to witness high-stakes races and soak in the vibrant atmosphere.
For fans that aren’t able to come to the live racing, Del Mar has a year-round satellite betting facility, Surfside Race Place, where bettors can bet on races from around the country. The off-season setup includes simulcast betting, so racing lovers can stay entertained no matter the time of year.

Del Mar’s crown jewel is the Pacific Classic Stakes (G1), a race for three-year-olds and older that takes place over 1 1/4 miles (2km) and has quite a big purse. Other Grade 1 events include the Del Mar Oaks, Eddie Read Stakes, and Bing Crosby Stakes, named in honor of one of the track’s founders.
Another standout is the Del Mar Debutante (G1), a key race for two-year-old fillies, and the Del Mar Futurity (G1), which has showcased future Kentucky Derby contenders in the past. These elite events attract the country’s best horses, trainers, and jockeys, making Del Mar a hotspot for competitive racing.
Del Mar Racetrack Admission and Parking
Admission fees at Del Mar change depending on your seating preference. General admission is affordable, while premium areas like the Turf Club require membership or an invitation. Parking is available but normally has a fee, which will change depending on the event you are going to and where you want to sit.
